Earth is also called Blue Planet. It is the densest of all planets. •

Its  Circumference is 40,232 km. and  Area is 510 all million sq. km.

Average distance from sun: 149 million-km.

Nearest position of earth to sun is called Perihelion.

EARTH  is shaped like a orange.

Greek philosopher Aristotle was the first to propose that the Earth is spherical based on actual physical evidence.

 MOVEMENTS OF EARTH

Daily movement is called Rotation. Annual movement is called Revolution.

ROTATION Spins on its imaginary axis from west to east in 23 hrs, 56 min and 40.91 sec

Earth's rotation results in  causation of days and nights and change in the direction of wind and ocean currents, rise and fall of tides everyday.

The longest day in North Hemisphere is June 21, while shortest day is on December 22 (Vice-versa in Southern Hemisphere).

Eratosthenes (Greek ,274 BC)  known as Father of Geography.

Days and nights are almost equal at the equator.

Earth's motion in elliptical orbit around the sun is called as Revolution.

 Earth's average orbital velocity is 29.79 km/s.Takes 365 days, 5 hrs, 48 min and 45.51 sec.

It results in one extra day every fourth year is called as leap year.

Revolution time of the Earth is 365 days, 5 hrs., 48 min, 45.51 sec.

Earth has only one satellite  is Moon.

GK Questions in English  about Earth

The distance between Earth and sun is about 14,94,07,000 km.

Equatorial circumference is about 40,075 km.

Polar circumference is about 40,024 km.

Average ocean dept is 3,554 m.

Jan. 3 date of perihelion    (minimum distance from the sun).

July 4 date of aphelion    (maximum distance from the sun).

Orbital circumference  924,375,700 km.

 The average orbital speed is about  29.79 km/sec. (107,218 km/h) .

Minimum surface temperature is  -89°C.

Mean surface temperature is 14°C.

Maximum surface temperature is 57°C.

Spring season: On March 21, the sun is directly overhead the equator.

Summer season: On June 21, the sun is directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer.

Autumn season: On September 23, the sun returns to the equator.

Winter season: On December 22, the sun is at the Tropic of Capricorn.

Some  dates when days and nights are equal is called EQUINOXES. (March 21: Vernal equinox Sept 23: Autumnal equinox)

The difference between the length of days and the length of nights is the largest is called as SOLSTICE.(June 21 : Summer Solstice, Dec 22: Winter Solstice)

GK Questions in English for kids

Twilight is the time of day between daylight and darkness ,whether it is after sunset, or before sunrise. It is a time when the light from the sky appears diffused and often pinkish.

LATITUDE ,imaginary lines drawn parallel to the Equator. (23½" N represents Tropic of Cancer while 23%* S represents Tropic of Capricorn)

Equator is the Greatest Circle that can be drawn on the earth's surface. •

One degree Latitude is approx..111km.

LONGITUDE is the angular distance measured from the centre of the earth.

A system of parallels and meridians that form a network of intersecting lines is called a Geographic Grid.

The angle between the magnetic meridian and the geographic at a place is called Magnetic Declination.

There are 360 meridians of longitude.

The Prime Meridian is a longitude of t passing through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich near London, This meridian a taken by geographers to divide the earth into the Eastern and the Western hemispheres

Prime Meridian passes through UK, France Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo

A particular meridian is chosen for the whole country, the time of which is known as Standard Time.

Russia has 11 time zones ,while USA has 9, Canada has 6, France has 12, (maximum; because of several overseas territories) and Australia has 3 time zones. India, the longitudinal extent of which is approx. 30°, has adopted only one time zone.

The standard time OF INDIA which is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

LUNAR ECLIPSE: When earth comes between sun and moon (Occurs only on a full moon day).

Most lunar eclipses in many cases, it becomes reddish called Blood Moon.

SOLAR ECLIPSE :When moon comes between sun and earth .

When two bodies are aligned with the Sun such that the three form a straight line, this is called Syzygy.

Diamond Ring, God's Eye and Baily's Beads are the terms associated with Solar eclipse.

TIDES: Refer to the phenomenon of regular rise and fall of the sea water.

SPRING TIDE: When the sun, moon and the earth are in a straight line (syzygy), the gravitational force is at its greatest because tide producing forces of both sun and moon complement each other and they pull together. This produces tides of unusually great range, called the spring tide.

A Proxigean Spring Tide (also known as a Perigean Spring Tide) is a tide that occurs three or four times in a year .

THE CRUST  is the outermost and the thinnest layer of the earth's surface, about 8 to 40 km thick.

The Crust is made up of two layers - an upper lighter layer called the Sial (Silicate + Aluminium) and a denser and heavy layer called Sima (Silicate + Magnesium). •

The Mantle under the Crust is about 2890 km.

The Asthenosphere is the main source of magma .

The line of separation between the Mantle and the Crust is known as Mohoviricic Discontinuity.

THE CORE : the depth  2900 km lies the Core of the earth.

The temperatures in the earth's Core lie approx. 6000 degree c.

The core  is the densest layer of the earth.

A mineral is a naturally occurring organic or inorganic substance, having an orderly atomic structure and a definite chemical composition and physical properties.

The minerals which contain metals are called as metallic minerals.

The metallic minerals which are profitably mined are called as the ores .

The crust of the earth is made up of more than 2000 minerals.

Quartz: It is one of the most important components of sand and granite.

Quartz consists of silica and is a hard mineral virtually insoluble in water.

10% of the earth's crust is made up of pyroxene.

Mica: Made up of elements potassium, aluminium, magnesium iron, silicon, etc.

Olivine: Magnesium, iron and silica are the major elements .

280 million years ago, the entire landmass formed one super continent, called Pangea.

The entire water mass has been given the name Panthalasia.

Largest continent area wise :Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

Plate Tectonics Theory deals with the movement of rock structures which are in the form of Plates and it is not only the continents which are in motion but the oceans as well.
